When it first appeared in a 1958 article, the term information technology (IT) was vague and novel. Today, IT encompasses a wide scope of areas, including processes, computer software and hardware, information systems, programming languages, and data constructs. In the Federal marketplace, IT professionals perform a variety of functions ranging from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and information databases. A few of the duties that IT professionals perform include data management, networking, computer hardware engineering, database and software design, and system management and administration. IT is starting to spread further than the conventional personal computer and network technologies and more into integrating such other technologies as cell phones, televisions, automobiles, and more. As a result, the demand for such jobs is increasing.
